Head temple of the Shingon sect Toji branch. Built for the protection of the nation in 796 two years after the founding of Heiankyo. In 823 it was handed to Kukai (Kobo Daishi founder of the Shingon sect). The five storied pagoda is 57 m and the highst in Japan. The tempel is a world heritage site.
